From the road...

Had been to my Uncle's house last evening. Knew they had a young guest when I saw a gleaming thunderbird, literally tethered to the gate outside, unless ofcourse my "in-their-late-sixties" uncle and aunt decided it was time to exhaust the remaining adrenalin in their bodies and freak out! The truth turned out to be less exciting as usual and I met the visitor, their son's friend,a British guy of Indian descent, with a very "propuh" accent who was out to explore India in an Enfield. Reminded me of Che and Granado on their Norton(Ref-1). This guy started out from Kashmir, journeyed across Leh, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana covering almost all the states in the western half of the country. These adventures always sets me thinking. I would love to travel, given an opportunity which again brings me back to the same question, don't v have to create our opportunities?? Y is it that abroad ppl follow their dreams..Y is it that you can take out a car and set out in the US but not in India? Is it just my perspective? The first answer that comes to my mind is ofcourse, the basic of all basic necessities, the pieces of processed papyrus called "money". But very honestly, is that the only factor or are v just not too certain of getting out of that warm cocoon? I really dont know.

Ref1 - The Motorcycle Diaries. I have been totally fascinated by that book!!!

Note1 - Also came to know that Dec 26 is "Boxing Day". My benightedness made me wonder if that had anything to do with Boxing. Fortunately, it doesn't say that
here.

I loved the book, but the movie really got me going! (Motorcycle Diaries). I know I did a post abt that quite a while back, but feeling too lazy to dig it up.

Personally, I think the focus on getting an education and a job (Even if it's not your parents - but family, friends, neighbours, pet dog) is so stressing that we don't consider that in India. And even if we do - it is seen as some kind of cultural snobbery. As though you have to discover your own country. (Which we have to - because there are so many countires within India anyway!)

I have tried taking off a few times - and it's harder because of two factors. 1) Being female and 2) Being and Indian tourist in India, and in a sense competing with the Foreign tourists..

@sumz.. number 1 reason, y we find it diffcult to do much travelling in India... all of us are in the software industry.. you have to beg to be leave the office on most days of the week.. :(

@neha, I agree with u abt the responsibility part, but cultural snobbery, not something that struck my mind at all... And yes, for a female, packing a bag and setting off to unknown destinations still sounds very much absurd in India.
@TLW, forget taking leave, what about those long weekends?

For one, the ease of taking your car/renting one and just hitting the roads out here in the US of A...am talking abt the quality of roads and the connectivity...and of course Google Maps :-)
And another reason would be the assured quality of hotels out ehre and how easily you can book them online..
And with everything on the net, it makes it extremely simple to plan out a trip.
Guess it all boils down to the information superhighway and the other highways too!

B'coz in US ppl are socially secure, means if they don't earn - the govt pays for their food... (atleast for some time)... for us it's the otherway round... and this is the biggest turnouts for us to persue our dreams... another factor which is more social in nature... what will ppl say if i did ABC... (rather not did engg/med/...) ... there is a wish to be recognized by the society... we always crib abt this society but are never able to get out of the loop...

even in india, those who are financially independent and don't care abt the social barriers... do persue what they dream... and a lot of them are really successful in their ventures...
